Burkemont Mountain, Morganton, NC

N facing, 1200 AGL, 3.6 to 1 Glide
XC Record: none yet

Burkemont in Depth

Launch: Launch is a smooth slope and is 3 to 4 gliders wide. The trees at the end of the launch have been removed, so they should no longer be an obstacle while launching.
Landing: The LZ is straight out and slightly to the right of launch and there are powerlines on 3 sides. There is a house in the back left hand corner of the field with a cement driveway. The glide is long so head for the lz if you are more than 200 ft below launch.
General info: Both paragliders and hanggliders are welcome. You must have a minumum P2/H2 to fly.

There is a bowl to the right of launch. The best chance at a thermal is near the house to the right, or along the powerline which leads down toward the lz. There is a finger to the left of launch which you should not get behind in any west wind.

The instrument approach for Morganton airport is at 3700 MSL over launch. Launch is 2430 MSL. The runway is 5500ft and handles some jet traffic. Move 2 miles west along the ridge if you approach 3700 MSL to avoid this airspace. It is class E space, so you can fly in it. If you choose to do so, keep your eyes open and your radio on so others can point out traffic to you. Refer to the sectional chart for more info.

The launch is owned by Mike Watson and should be contacted before flying. You will need to sign a waiver before flying.
